An amazing city. Its New York and Las Vegas, and Hollywood of India. Most cosmopiltan city. Must visit once. In India I have seen people born or brought up in mumbai, they don't like any where else in world. Also when you live in mumbai you understand why terrorists target mumbai. Its richest and costliest city in India. Also its got rich heritage. But I didn't felt like coming back again and again to mumbai(bombay), but one visit was a must. And when you plan to visit a city, first question comes to mind is where to stay and next is what to visit.
Reaching there is not a concern since best cities all have got domestic and international airports.
There are plenty of public transport options available, but in mumbai most common is local train, which one should never take if s/he is not local resident. Secondly and most convinient is taxi, available 24/7.
Best part of mumbai is south mumbai, and if one stays in south mumbai its best. Also top preffered hotel to stay in mumbai is "Taj Mahal Palace", and that hotel has got two wings palace wing and tower wing. Palace wing should be preferred. Its facing iconic "Gateway Of India", and now since hotel itself is an icon. But I prefer staying on hotel which is on marine drive like Oberoi or trident. Marine drive is very close to "Gateway Of India". Since hotel's on marine drive have got amazing sea view and nice marine drive infornt of them. They are peaceful, calm, but both are business hotel, but if you stay you wont regret. Since gateway of india is very crowded, so when you come out of Taj you see huge crowd.
No doubt the first choice to stay in Mumbai should be Taj Mahal Palace - india's first hotel - facing Gateway of India. Second choice could be Oberoi which is on one of most famous and popular place - marine drive (diamond necklace). Oberoi is also good for solo traveler, since they have a small room specifically for solo travelers. Then there are multiple options like JW Mariott on famous Juhu beach.
I stayed in Trident a business hotel, it was definitely very much worth, and great value for money. Very basic in hotel activities, but rest was excellent like location, room, view, and indian food. There are some more like Inter continental  and marine plaza, but they impressed me. Oberoi is even better. In the morning I was going on walk in marine drive, and later in night also again. Mumbai is very busy, crowded, and fast city, and the morning walk on marine drive was very refreshing. And lights in the night  "Diamond necklace". In  trident I can go to roof top, and pool to have much bigger view. If I walk on marine drive in night I can drink and eat at "Pizza by the bay". Gaylord is another famous there, and Dome on the top of Inter continnental is I believe most happening.

Below are the pictures taken from Trident, Nariman Point, Mumbai -

Marine Drive, Mumbai as viewed from Roof top, Trident.

The best place to visit in mumbai is the "Gateway Of India", from where you can take boat ride, and in evening you can take a horse baggi ride. And the iconic hotel "The taj mahal palace" in front of it. One can visit this place early morning like 7 or 8, since at that time there its less crowded. And lot of pigeons. But night time is preferrable.  I would suggest at both times. In day time its very crowded.

Taj Mahal Palace - (Exactly opp. Gateway of India and its sea facing)
Two wings in the hotel(Palace and tower). Prefer to stay in Palace wing to mix history and heritage with your comfortable stay -

Apart from visiting Marine drive and Gateway off India, one must visit the local market and iconic buildings of bombay. There are several local street markets like fashion street, colaba market, etc. I would suggest visiting Colaba Market, which starts from Regal. Colaba market mentioned Colaba Causeway is very famous and really nice. Also there are some very famous restaurants in this market. Colaba market is very close to the Taj Mahal Palace hotel and Gateway of india.

And last but not the least are the famous buildings of mumbai, which are located in south mumbai, and all are very close to each other. One can walk in MG Road, walk infront of CST station, Church Gate, and few art galleries. I dont know how are they from inside but from out side they are all give a deja vu feeling of nostalgiac feeling or amazing feeling. I like to walk in south mumbai/colaba area and look at those buildings markets.

IF you decide to stay in marine drive or anywhere in south mumbai, and take taxi from airport ask driver to drive through bandra vorli sea link.

2 Days
Marine Drive, Gateway Of India, Colaba Market, and Crawford Market and nearby.
Hotels suggested by Me - Trident, Oberoi, and Taj Mahal Palace.

When I am searching for hotel in a city, there are some considerations. And I am as usual looking for four things - Stars, Facilities, rooms, and location. And the last is cost
In mumbai, the hotel which qualifies all these and which is the best is Taj Mahal Palace. Hotel which is next to Gateway of India. But its too costly.

Another option is to stay at some hotel in marine drive, the second best location. But may be more than 50% people would say best location. It is the 4 km long C-shaped sea facing road. It is also called diamond necklace or queen's necklace. Costliest place in India. Business capital. And most peaceful place in Mumbai. So, this was the place I was looking for most beautiful, peaceful, and famous.
And when I looked for hotels I shortlisted only hotels in this area - Trident and Oberoi.
Oberoi was too costly and after searching and when time was right I found a deal in trident.
Trident - 5 star hotel with huge number of rooms. One of the tallest building in mumbai, on marine drive, sea facing.
Middle tall building is Trident Hotel

Marine Drive as seen from the first floor of Trident. Also swimming pool is the first floor -

Let me make one thing clear roof top is not exactly a open roof. Its a kind of meeting room with glasses all around.
I would make sure that rooms in Trident are big. I booked a primer room sea view, and it was good. View from room was sea. Good sea view. In room dinning was excellent. Bathroom was not so big. Mini bar inside room was good and lot of drinking options. Along with Bed, there is study table, chair with table lamp. Two sofas with a table next to big window. Window itself has a sitting space, where one can sit. From window you can see sea only and other end. You cant see the road down and also you cant see the marine drive. You can see if you pay more and book a corner suite. I would recommend Premier room sea view.

View from room -

Night view of marine drive form Pool -

Cons of the hotel -
Less dinning options considering the hotel is so huge.
Buffet was not good, and very costly. But may be they have improved the buffet.
Very few dinning options around hotel, esp. if you are new it would be difficult to find one.
Swimming pool not so amazing.
Business hotel, and so very few activities inside hotel for families.
Other benefits of staying in trident -
Next to marine drive.
In the morning, evening, and in night just walk on marine drive.
All the sights for seeing withing 2 km's from hotel. Places like Gateway Of India, Colaba Market, CST station, Church gate station, MG Road, etc. Also all famous art and science galleries and museum's within 2 km's.
Small Shopping complex within the hotel.
Some tips -
Book Sea facing room.
In room dinning is better.
Don't take taxi from inside hotel.

But, If you are looking for luxury, I believe best option can be -
